Torsion springs, with standard inner diameter sizes of 1.75 and 2.00 inches, are used to counterbalance and assist in the opening and closing of your garage door. We recommend using torsion springs made of oil-tempered steel instead of galvanized steel.
A galvanized torsion spring won’t rust, but the wire is cold drawn when the spring is manufactured, which can cause the torsion spring to lose its tension rather quickly. In fact, we’ve noticed that garage doors installed with torsion springs were extremely heavy to lift just one year later. This problem can be corrected by adding more turns on the springs, but this can create other problems just as quickly. Your torsion spring should have a specific number of turns based on the door height, drum size, and track radius. When you have to add turns after only one year, the door may balance when it’s one or two feet off the floor, but when the door is raised more than halfway, it will be extremely hot, which means it will go up on its own. This puts a lot of strain on your garage door opener and panel.
On the other hand, oil-tempered garage door torsion springs lose their tension much more slowly than galvanized torsion springs. When oil-tempered springs are made, the wire is hot drawn and reheated to remove stress after it’s formed.
Oil-tempered torsion springs can rust, but you can prevent this by using a process called Egyptian coating. The torsion spring is dipped in a black liquid and placed in an oven to bake the liquid to the torsion spring. This creates an anti-corrosive coating that prevents rust, provides cleaner handling of the spring, and allows your garage door to open and close more quietly as the torsion spring winds and unwinds.
This coating doesn’t get between the coils where they touch, so it’s a good idea to use 3-and-1 oil or motor oil after the spring is wound. Because these types of oil won't evaporate over time, you’ll probably only have to use it once or twice during the life of the spring.
One more tip – when ordering a pair of replacement torsion springs, measure both of your existing springs to make sure they are both the same size. It is not uncommon to have a left-hand wound spring, and right-hand wound spring of different sizes.
